Central Laboratory of Geodesy is a leading centre in Bulgaria for theoretic and applied research in almost all fields of geodesy and surveying. The Central Laboratory of Geodesy serves as an independent advisor to the government agencies on scientific and technical questions of national importance. The Central Laboratory of Geodesy conducts basic research in space geodesy, geodetic astronomy, physical geodesy, mathematical geodesy, estimation techniques, global, regional and local geodynamics.
The major contributions of the Laboratory include:
- Contribution to the general theory of the Gaussian coordinates;
- Maps of the recent vertical crustal movements in Eastern Europe, the Carpato-Balkan region and Bulgaria developed in collaboration with the Geological Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences;
- GPS constraints on the present-day kinematics in Bulgaria and along the northern boundary of the Eastern Mediterranean deformational system;
- Optical laser reflector system installed on the 'Bulgaria-1300' satellite to enabled its laser tracking;
- The Laboratory is a centre for satellite laser tracking data analysis of the International Earth Rotation Service (IERS), Paris. Every year our results are published and used for maintenance of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF).
