The Ministry of Economy is the competent central public authority that develops the strategies, policies and legislation necessary for the implementation of the Governmental Programme and Strategy in the sector of economy and industry, mineral resources, energy, trade, SMEs and business environment in line with the national and European market economy requirements and for the facilitation of traders’ initiatives.

The Department for Energy follows the development of national strategies and policies in the field of energy, energy efficiency and promotion of renewable energy resources and ensures their proper implementation through national action plans, specific national regulations and thorough coordination with other competent authorities in the energy sector. Furthermore, it contributes to formulating the national position of Romania concerning the EC policies in the energy sector.
