The Applied Electronics Laboratory (APEL) is one of the main laboratories in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Patras. It was founded in 1974 and it is responsible for courses in the area of Analog and Digital Electronics, Microelectronics, Microprocessors and Microcomputers, Embedded Systems, Telecommunication Electronics and Real Time Networks. Over 200 Master Theses and over 40 Ph.D. Dissertations have been completed in the past twenty years. Many more are, currently, in the stage of execution or completion. UoP - ApEL is a major (institute-like) laboratory in the Electrical and Computer Engineering dept in the University of Patras. It has proven expertise in all aspects of real time and networked embedded systems, having addressed issues of radio field-busses, multimedia streaming over wireless embedded systems, modelling and implementation trade-offs. It adheres with consistency to the philosophy of applying our designs in advanced and challenging applications. During the past fifteen years, it can claim participation, with acknowledged success, in leading consortia of EC projects. ApEL collaborates closely with the Industrial Systems Institute (I.S.I), which operates under the supervision of the General Secretariat of Research and Technology (G.S.R.T) of the Ministry of Development. The principal objective of this joint entity is to contribute to the improvement of the competitiveness of the Greek industry, through transfer of knowledge and application of state-of-the-art technologies.
The joint entity UoP - ApEL/ISI has participated in a large number of EC-funded projects, taking responsibility as partner or coordinator of international consortia. Some of the most recent projects of ApEL include the following European R&D programs: uSWN-IST-34642, BETSY-IST- 004042, TORERO-IST- 37573, RFIELDBUS, IST-1999-11316, LOCCATEC-IST -29401. Other projects that ApEL has participated into include: ESPRIT/FUSE, ESPRIT / STANDARDS II (OMI domain 8210), ESPRIT / DOMITIUS (OMI domain, 20290), ESPRIT / CHABLIS (OMI Domain 24081), RACE/TELEMED, ACTS Projects: PANORAMA and MISA (Management of Integrated SDH & ATM networks).
